San Juan Hospital Featured in Joint Commission’s Emergency Management Newsletter

Uprooted tree from Hurricane Maria

Acadia’s unwavering commitment to deliver quality care to those in need even in the darkest of times rang true when San Juan Capestrano Hospital (SJCH) in Puerto Rico faced two hurricanes within just weeks of each other in 2017: Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria. The team’s emergency response helped to protect patients and highlighted practices that can be used by others for how to handle future adverse events.

Earlier this year, The Joint Commission’s Emergency Management Leader newsletter shared a case study about SJCH, applauding the emergency preparation and response of the local team and parent company Acadia and noting the importance of the lessons learned from their experience:

“San Juan Capestrano Hospital in Puerto Rico relied on people power during the devastating back-to-back hurricanes in 2017, with staff at all levels pitching in to keep the facility up and running. The lessons learned helped prepare the organization for subsequent disasters such as a series of earthquakes in 2020 and the COVID-19 public health emergency.”

True to the Company’s core value of “We Succeed as One,” every staff member contributed to creating an environment that protected our patients and our staff while continuing to provide uninterrupted care during the prolonged emergency where the hospital was 95% occupied.

These efforts underscore Acadia’s ongoing dedication to resilience and preparedness, ensuring we remain ready to face any challenge. The lessons learned continue to shape our approach to emergency management today.
